2024 Reading Challenge: February

Rabbit Rabbit! It’s the first of the month!

Can you believe February had 29 days?!! Honest question, did it feel like 300 days to anyone but me? It most likely felt that way to me because I’m a teacher and classroom management is thrown to the dogs as soon as it gets warm outside.

We didn’t have any snow days this month like we did in January BUT I did finish 7 books and did not finish (DNF’d) 3 books. Out of the 7 books I read in February, I had three 5-star reads.

The month began with finishing the 3rd book in the ” A Court of Thorns and Roses” or ACOTAR series by Sarah J. Maas, “A Court of Wings and Ruin”. This book was February’s very first 5-star read. This book had ME in RUINS! Then I read “A Court of Frost and Starlight” which is a tiny baby book and I rated it 4 stars.

I then tried to take a break from the series and picked up “Homebodies” by Tembe Denton-Hurst which was my first DNF for the month. Personally, I read to get away from my reality and reading “Homebodies” felt like trudging through someone else’s reality. Personally, I’m not very interested in reading books within the literary fiction genre in this season. Give me wings and magical powers and I’m absolutely in my reading element.

After that, I read my first 4-star read, the last book in the ACOTAR series, “A Court of Silver Flames” and you may not believe me, but I finished that 757-page book in 5 days and YES, I am fully employed. I may or may not have been staying up late and ignoring my husband while I read this book. Once, I finished reading that book and weeping about the end to the amazing 5-book series, I had to DNF my second book. I made it 100 pages into “The Rabbit Hutch” by Tess Gunty before I DNF’d it. And yes, “The Rabbit Hutch” is another literary fiction (notice a trend here?). I didn’t care enough about the book to read past page 100 because no one had magical powers.

Then I read “Magnolia Parks” by Jessa Hastings which is the first book in the Magnolia Parks series. This book was a 3-star read for me because of the cyclical nature of the relationship between the protagonist and her love interest. For 423 pages they are stuck in an icky and unhealthy cycle. As a member of the healthy relationship club, I was bored. Give me the cuddles, give me the safety and security of a healthy relationship and I’ll eat it up. The main characters are too young and dumb to maintain a healthy relationship with each other however, I would continue reading this series because I’m a hopeless romantic and I want a happy ending for them.

Next, I DNF’d “Long Shot” by Kennedy Ryan because I haven’t always been a member of the healthy relationship club and this book triggered me to the point where I was complaining about the chaos within the pages to my mom at 6:45am on my drive to work. Unfortunately, I did not look up the trigger warnings for the book before I read it. For context, the trigger warnings are rape/sexual violence, domestic abuse, and cheating. Again, I read for the purpose of escaping from reality, so you won’t catch me intentionally reading books with the above triggers present. After I DNF’d “Long Shot”, I listened to “Coming Home” by the same author. It was a cute little 3-star read for me.

With only 10 days left in February I spent 8 days reading “Powerless” by Lauren Roberts and falling in love with the protagonist Paedyn and her love interest Kai. “Powerless” was my second 5-star read but by the time I read it, I was in a reading slump. I spent 6 days reading the first 50% of the book then 48 hours reading the latter half of the book. While reading “Powerless” on my Kindle, I listened to “First Lie Wins” by Ashley Elston. “First Lie Wins” was incredibly good. It was so good that I spent every waking moment of my day listening to it. I absolutely loved it! It has the organized chaos of a well-written mystery, the twisty-turns of a complicated thriller and the happy ending I so desperately need. Elston’s mystery was my third and final 5-star read for February.

I’ve finished 17 books so far in 2024 so I am 28 books away from meeting my reading goal for the year!

February was a great reading month for me! I’m ready to keep crushing my reading goal in March!
